Adjusting Our Personal Cruise Control

Our habits and our body operate like a cruise control and will only perform automatically those things we program it to do. Most people don’t realize they have the power to change these behaviors. They feel out of control and that life is “happening” to them.

ON/CRUISE- Whenever we observe something that we would like to have in our life and make the decision that it is something we want; our body begins to build a neural pathway which will assist us in doing that thing. The body is neutral and doesn’t care if the thing is good for us or not. It merely wants to assist us in making this thing easy

SET- When we have turned on the “machine” it is up to us to make conscious choices for a long enough period of time for our body to take over. Once we have established that we want something, we go about repeating the behavior. Over time, this neural pathway gets stronger and stronger and stronger. After an number of repetitions, this behavior turns into a habit and in some cases an addiction. The body can be our servant or can become our master depending on the choices we make and the actions we take.

COAST- Sometimes we’ll take a break from our negative or positive behaviors. We get back into our comfort zones and allow our energy in this area to slow down.

ACCELERATE- Usually when we set a new goal or set our mind on something, we put our energy towards that. We step up the pace and give it everything we have. I am not just talking about positive things here. We do this with negative behaviors as well.

RESUME- We have created neural pathways for all addictions and habits in our lives. At any time we can jump back onto that path and resume our old behaviors. We may want to resume some of our positive behaviors and with very little effort can bring them back to full strength. On the flip side, a person can jump back into an old addiction with relative ease. All it takes is a choice to get back on that road and an action towards that end.

OFF- When setting a new behavior, it becomes necessary at times to turn off the cruise control. We stop acting automatically and begin to act methodically. By being aware of our negative behaviors, turning them off as we recognize them and implementing a new positive behavior, we can change any behavior. However, most of us would rather stay in cruise control.

Every behavior, habit and addiction was put into your body by you. You can continue down your path feeling as though you have no control, or you can turn off the cruise control. You have that power. You hold the power to do that.

Sometimes the idea of turning this off seems daunting. As a coach, I assist my clients in disabling negative behaviors and creating positive new ones. The tools I use with them can help you to regain control of your life.
