Because It Is A Diamond!

A diamond is a diamond because it went through what it did. Unless one does what the diamond does, he or she will always be less than a diamond. Sure, a person may come out beautiful like a cubic zirconia or a moissanite, but never will he or she be a diamond, because a diamond is a diamond because it went through what it did. You can be anything you would like in this world, but not under the guise of fake it ‘til you make it. A fake is a fake regardless of its appearance. In order for you to be what you want to be, you must BE it until you make it!

The Man and The Eagle

One day while walking down a quiet path, a man found an eagle holding an enormous chain. He asked the eagle, “Why are you holding that chain” to which the eagle replied, “I cannot let it go!” The man asked why not and the eagle responded, “Each link on this chain was made by the poor choices I made. The only way I can let them go is to repair the damage I caused.” The man thought about the simplicity of the action. If all the eagle had to do was repair the damage that was done, why didn’t he just do that? The man looked politely at the eagle and asked how long it has been since he flew. The eagle responded that he had just finished flying, but it was too difficult to stay in the air because of the heavy chain. The man looked at the eagle and said “Would you like to fly like you used to?” The eagle doubtfully said “I would like to, but this chain is too great. It has my power.” The man looked the eagle in the eyes and with love in his heart said, “Do you know what needs to be done.” The eagle knew, although he didn’t want to say anything. Holding in his thoughts, the eagle looked at the man and said “What needs to be done?” The man, holding his gaze on the eagle said, “You need to right the wrongs.” The eagle looked up at him and said “I know! but it is too hard.” The man put his arm around the eagle and said “No matter what happens, I will be here for you. If you need me to fly with you or be with you, I will be there. You are the most important being to me in this world right now.” The eagle thanked the man and told him that he would take care of what needed to be done. The man said “Great! By when?” The eagle said “I will do it right away.” The man asked the eagle to meet him in that very spot as time went on to tell him how it was going and to support him. The eagle agreed and went to work righting the wrongs. Often, the eagle would meet with the man and share of his experiences; each time he returned the chain grew smaller and smaller. One day the chains were gone and the eagle flew like the man had promised. He flew higher and more powerfully than he ever had. The man and the eagle were friends for life, and the eagle never again bound himself in the chains.

The Difference Poem

The Difference

___

I met you on the path

While I was on my way

To a place I had in my mind

That I would reach some day.

___

I enjoyed our time together

The stories that were told.

I asked you to come along with me

You said you were too old.

___

I asked you of your dreams

Of where you’d like to be

And said that you should reach for them.

You said, “That’s not for me!”

___

I talked with you about your goals.

You knew not what they were

I asked you if you had a vision

You said you were not sure.

___

I asked you if you’d like a change

You said, “I surely would!”

Then I asked you do something about it.

You said “I wish I could!”

___

Each time we had a conversation

My ideas, you’d disregard

Each time I shared the power you have

You’d say it was too hard.

___

Although we’d talk of future plans

You got in your own way

Instead of finding reasons to win

You found the reasons to stay

___

And so one day our paths divided

You stayed in the same place

You went your way, I went mine

With sadness on my face.

___

You could have done a whole lot more

But instead you played it small.

In place of your magnificence

Your growth you would forestall

___

You saw “what is” as never changing

I saw it as a phase

Instead of using your talents for more

You justified your ways

___

And this is why our lives are different

Because of what we chose

You could still accomplish greatness

And more I would suppose.

___

It’s not too late, there’s always time.

There’s something you can do.

Decide you will live differently!

Your life is up to you.

Find Answer Through Testing

The answers you receive are determined by the questions you ask. Why is it that so many of us ask the wrong questions or ask no questions at all?

When a person has a theory, he or she will pursue evidence that supports or refutes idea. One speculates whether the theory is plausible or implausible. What determines the outcome? Testing!

Many of us accept theories as truth without looking at the evidence. Instead of investigating for ourselves, we blindly accept the ideas of others as truth. Perhaps the theory of another is true, and perhaps it is not! Sometimes we will not even ask questions because we perceive someone as credible. What if they are not? What if their ideas are unproven, or in other words untested?

Granted, we cannot see a concept from every possible angle, but we certainly could paint a clearer picture by asking a few more questions. However, the caveat to this idea is that one must know what questions to ask. How do you know what questions to ask? Start asking questions! The way to discover the right questions is the same process that is used to prove a theory, through testing!

A hint! Find someone who is good at asking the right questions. Notice how they do it and mirror their behaviors. If it can work for them, it could work for you.

Ask some good questions today!

Are You A Picker Or A Chooser?

You have probably heard the phrase beggars can’t be choosers, but what about the phrase pickers can’t be choosers? I am reading the book The Paradox of Choice by Barry Schwartz and he made an interesting distinction between pickers and choosers. I love this distinction because we rarely slow down to consider our options. Let me help clarify the difference between a picker and a chooser.

A chooser is a person who digs deep to uncover the choices that would be best for him or her. Instead of accepting what is placed before them, choosers will explore all of the options. They will look at what has been placed before them and  consider whether there might be other alternatives as well.  The chooser will consider the long and short term consequences of his or her decisions. He or she is fully aware of why the decision would be best, and uses that ability to choose the best path. Only when the chooser has determined that what they are considering is best for them will they decide. If none of the options will work, the chooser will create another option.

A picker does not reflect on other options. The only options he or she can see are the ones placed before him or her. All a picker can do is grab what’s in front of them and hope for the best. A picker sees no alternatives.

The distinction is as helpful as Steve Chandlers Owner/Victim distinction. Owners tend to be choosers. An owner will weigh the options and either choose or create based on an aware analysis. A victim tends to be a picker. A victim will only pick between A and B, and never consider that there might be a C. A victim allows others to influence his or her thoughts and decisions while an owner chooses his or her thoughts and decisions.

Lets face it, if you are a picker it is difficult to be a chooser, and vice versa. You are either accpeting WHAT IS as the only option, or you are actively looking for a better way.

Ladders

I dreamed a strange dream in which my room was full of ladders. All shapes and sizes adorned the walls. Each ladder was part of a collection and represented people I had met and experiences I had along the way. Each ladder was vital for making me who I am today and represented the climb I had made beyond my original self. The menagerie of ladders was astonishing and made me wonder if each of these ladders made me who I was, who am I? The strangest part of this dream was that I just woke up in this room full of ladders; I could see no logical path for my arrival, I just showed up. However, I thought to myself that since I was there, I might as well have a look around. As I scoured the room I noticed that each ladder was unique; some were small and some very tall, but each whether it had one step or 100, was important to me and my character. No matter the size of the ladder, each had made an impact. But again, I wondered how I had never noticed this room before. If all of my reacting to life’s introductions had gotten me this far, what could happen if I took control? What might be if I chose the ladders that went in that room? Where would my life be then? Now that I am awake in this room of ladders, what will I choose? What will my ladders be?

Black Hay

This poem is dedicated to my client Glen Swallow

Black Hay

I looked out on my field

and as far as I could see,

the weeds, the rocks, the dirt, the dust,

were looking back at me.

I had no doubts this land would give

the finest crops some day,

and so I labored, and toiled, and worked,

and planted seeds of hay.
